This commanding 120 cm traveller mask, known locally as a "Calao" or hornbill crest mask, originates from the Senufo people of northern Ivory Coast. Crafted for initiation rites and community ceremonies—especially within the Poro society—these masks symbolize powerful ancestral and spirit forces. The sleek, detachable head and elegant body lend agility to the dancer’s movements during rituals that mark important transitions
Meticulously carved from a single piece of indigenous hardwood, the mask’s bold hornbill crest (calao) references the sacred bird revered in Senufo spirituality. Its stained surface reflects both ceremonial purpose and aesthetic refinement. The mask retains its authentic patina—subtle cracks and age marks that testify to decades of cultural significance.
Standing at an impressive 120 cm, this Calao traveller mask makes a striking artistic centerpiece—perfect for collectors, connoisseurs, or modern interiors seeking a bold narrative of West African heritage.
